about

I’ve been having trouble dealing with loss of an old friend lately. My girlfriend said I woke her up talking in my sleep about a dream where bodies kept piling up, and there was nowhere to bury them but a swirling void of stars. I carried them to the void and held a funeral for each one.

This is that story, mixed with the story of the siege of Masada. During the siege of Masada, the Judaean rebels drew lots to determine which of them would be the last alive when the Romans came. The dream reminded me of that story— the last man alive on the fortress walls looking out at the Dead Sea.

lyrics

Lyrics: Jessie tells me that I talk in my sleep. That there are bodies piling up knee deep, and nowhere to bury them but the stars swirling before me. I carry each one in their memory-- the last man drawing lots at the dead sea over the din of the Roman war machines. Do you think that we go quietly? Do we hear the funeral still trapped in our bodies? Or is it as quiet as the Dead Sea?
